We started ScentWise because finding a perfume you actually love shouldn't take three confusing visits to a department store and a $200 mistake. Modern AI can do better — and that's what we built.

Our Mission

Fragrance is one of the most personal purchases anyone makes. It sits on your skin all day, becomes part of how people remember you, and yet most people buy it almost blind — picking from a shelf, trusting a celebrity face, or copying what a friend wears. The good ones cost $100–$400. The bad ones get worn twice and shoved in a drawer.

ScentWise exists to fix that. We believe everyone deserves a fragrance that genuinely matches their personality, lifestyle, and aesthetic — without needing to memorize the difference between an aldehyde and an ambroxan, and without spending a small fortune on samples to find out. Our job is to translate the messy, subjective, deeply personal experience of scent into clear recommendations you can actually act on.

What ScentWise Does

ScentWise is an AI-powered fragrance advisor. Tell us a little about yourself — through a chat, a photo of your outfit, your zodiac sign, your favorite music, or just the name of a perfume you wish you could afford — and our AI surfaces fragrances that fit. We work across seven different discovery modes because no single approach matches how everyone thinks about scent:

How We Built the Database

The heart of ScentWise is its fragrance database — over 75,000 perfumes indexed with brand, top/middle/base notes, concentration, price tier, and curated quality scores. We assembled it by combining publicly available fragrance metadata, manufacturer-published note pyramids, and structured data from open fragrance encyclopedias. Every entry was normalized, de-duplicated, and re-categorized into a consistent taxonomy of fragrance families and accords so that the AI can reason across them.

The database loads instantly in your browser — meaning search, filtering, and recommendations happen with zero server latency. We deliberately chose this architecture so that browsing is always fast, even on slow connections, and so that we never need to log what you search for.

The AI Behind the Recommendations

ScentWise's recommendations are powered by Google Gemini 2.0 Flash, a large language model with strong reasoning ability and multimodal (text + image) understanding. We chose Gemini because it lets us combine text-based queries (what you write to the chat advisor) with vision tasks (analyzing the photo you upload) inside a single coherent system.

But the model alone isn't enough. We ground every recommendation in our 75,000-perfume database — that means the AI isn't free to hallucinate fictional fragrances or invented notes. When the model suggests a perfume, that perfume is a real product with real notes, a real brand, and a real price tier. We do the heavy lifting on data quality so that the AI can focus on matching.

The free tier lets you take our AI advisor for a real test drive: one full personalized recommendation up front, plus two more after you share your email. No account, no credit card, no friction. If you find it useful, our Premium tier — $2.99 per month for 500 AI queries — supports the project and unlocks unlimited exploration. That's roughly six times cheaper than fragrance subscription boxes, and the recommendations are infinitely more personal.

Privacy First

We don't require an account to use ScentWise. We don't sell your data. We don't track you across the web. The free tier is genuinely free — your email, if you choose to share it, is used only to unlock additional queries and to occasionally send fragrance guides if you've opted in. Honesty Over Hype

We don't tell you a $400 niche fragrance is "objectively the best" — because that's not how scent works. We give you matches that fit your input, with honest pros and cons, longevity ratings, and price context. When we recommend a dupe, we say up front how close it actually smells, not just "smells exactly the same!" (it never does).

Affordable by Default

Perfume can be intimidating because it's expensive. We deliberately built ScentWise so that the database, the search, and the first AI recommendation are free. We surface budget options alongside luxury picks, and our Dupe Finder exists specifically to help people find affordable alternatives to $300 bottles. Premium is priced at $2.99 because that's what it costs us to serve high-quality AI calls — not what we could charge.
